The swine flu is spreading rapidly throughout the United States and Mexico. It appears likely that the World Health Organization will declare it as a flu pandemic. Here are some steps to take to avoid coming in contact with the swine flu and bringing that swine flu home to your friends or family. - Avoid travel. If you must travel, avoid traveling into those areas where "clusters" of swine influenza cases have been reported.
- Avoid crowded areas with lots of people such as airports, train and bus stations, public squares, crowded elevators, and movie theaters.
- Do not shake hands. Do not "kiss" greet as is common among people in South America and Middle Eastern countries.
- Wash your hands frequently.
- If you have any symptoms, see your doctor.
- Wear a N95 mask.
If you must go out into the crowds, it is recommended that you wear a mask. The Center for Disease Control recommends a disposable N95 respirator (mask). These are respiratory protective devices with a filter efficiency of 95% or greater. Surgical masks are NOT RECOMMENDED. Surgical masks may not adequately protect against aerosol or airborne particles, primarily because they allow for leakage around the mask and cannot be fit tested.
